San Jac hosting Senior Wellness Expo
PASADENA, Texas — Area seniors will have the opportunity to receive free health screenings and vaccines at the 2022 Senior Wellness Expo hosted by San Jacinto College on Friday, Nov. 11. This wellness event hosted from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. will have a special twist in that it will also honor area veterans for Veterans Day.
"The Senior Wellness Expo is an annual event hosted by the Continuing & Professional Development Community Engagement Department, featuring community service providers distributing information regarding community health and wellness resources designed for senior citizens," said Dr. Janice Sullivan, dean of community engagement, CPD. "We will have fun fitness demonstrations, informative speakers regarding topics important to senior citizens, free health screenings, and vaccines."
San Jac is hosting this wellness expo in partnership with area partners, which will hold individual screenings, vaccines, or demonstrations. Partners include Hegwood Law Group, MAB Insurance Agency, Humana MarketPoint, Molina Healthcare, Morada Deer Park, PAM Rehab, HEB, New Orleans Seafood Kitchen Deer Park, ABC Dental, Houston Methodist, BakerRipley, Houston Hospice, Oak Street Health, United Way, Harris County Precinct 2, Walgreens, DeBakey Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Texas Chiropractic College, EXP Realty, Legacy Community Health, Kelsey Siebold Pointer Study, Community Health Network, Harris County Tax Office, and more.
Residents age 55 and older are invited to participate in this free event that will also feature giveaways and food. San Jacinto police will be on hand to assist with any parking congestion issues, and the event is wheelchair and walker accessible.
"Seniors should attend the wellness expo because this is a unique opportunity to learn about resources and activities that can ensure happy, healthy living for the rest of their lives," said Sullivan. "It also provides a safe environment for networking and strengthening their social network. Research has proven that socializing during the senior years assists in increase longevity and life fulfillment. The wellness expo is going to be a fun event with long-term benefits."
At the event, veterans will be honored with a Wall of Honor, which will feature pictures of veterans and note cards for participants to write a brief message. Veterans will be gifted Americana-themed, framed artwork and a flag pin. The Beta Academy, a Houston charter school led by Darla Miller, will perform a few anthems for veterans. The Dobie High School Air Force ROTC, led by SM Sgt. Everett B. Valdez, TXANG (ret), will present the colors during the opening ceremony.
Featured speakers will discuss such important topics as:
- The Importance of Having an Estate Plan (Adam Hundley, Hegwood Law Group)
- Additional Benefits and Resources Available to Veterans Through Medicare Advantage Plans in Conjunction with VA Benefits (Miko Brunet, MAB Insurance)
- Home Safety and Downsizing (Sandi Matson, EXP Realty)
Four buses have been reserved to transport senior citizens to and from the event. Buses will depart from the following local community centers:
- East Harris County Community Center Pasadena
- Bay Area Community Center Bay Area/Clear Lake
- Felix L. Baldree Community Center Cloverleaf
- J.D. Walker Community Center Baytown
